Charles Mahoney (1903-1968) collaborated with Dunbar in writing and illustrating Gardeners’ Choice, a somewhat unconventional book about gardening which appeared in 1937. Mahoney had been one of Dunbar’s tutors at the Royal College of Art. He and Dunbar worked together on the Brockley Murals (1933-36) and formed a close association which broke up just as Gardeners’ Choice was published. Here Dunbar has drawn Mahoney sitting on a box, sketching at ground level. The bent or broken leaf below has no connection with the drawing above.
