At her own suggestion Dunbar was posted by the War Artists’ Advisory Committee to the Borders region to observe and record Land Girls in a variety of on- and off-duty activities. A so far unidentified country house near Wooler in Northumberland was made available to accommodate Land Girls working on local farms. Here they are in the process going to bed. Judging by the parlous state of the lower rail of the bunk, which Dunbar has tactfully hidden by a clothes-laden chair, high-spirited Land Girls were not above jumping on the furniture. The finished Land Girls Going to Bed is now in the Imperial War Museum, London
