Joseph’s Dream was the first of a trilogy featuring elements of the Joseph saga in Genesis. This sketch is a very early rendering of the composition. The finished version, with its narratives of Joseph dreaming (L) that his brothers, represented as sheaves of corn, and (R) that his family, represented as the sun, moon and stars, were bowing down to him, is a far cry from this very simple diptych form.
