The design, illustration and choice of texts of The Country Life 1938 Gardener’s Diary was entrusted in 1937 to Dunbar by Noël Carrington, publisher, editor and incidentally Dunbar’s Hampstead landlord. Several of Dunbar’s quiddities and conumdrums in the final version appear in these sketches: the -RIL of APRIL appear worked into the espaliered pot-plant; the bird’s nest in the most fantastic hat in all Dunbar’s work is seen in detail, where a cuckoo is laying her egg in in some smaller birds’ nest, perhaps a reference to how Dunbar saw herself in the context of her family.
