Dunbar’s instructions to her printers, whether for drawings for publication as in Gardeners’ Choice (1937) or for lesser work like her Christmas cards or ex libris plates, often ask for the size to be reduced, in order, as she put it, to tighten them up’. In her Oxford-centred days (1946-50) her preferred printer was the Potter Press, thereafter Mackays of Chatham. It is possible that this vignette was intended as an ex libris plate, or even to be incorporated into a bookmark.
We are grateful to Christopher Campbell-Howes for assistance.
