A diagrammatic explanation of trenching or double digging, prepared for an unidentified gardening manual. The buttressed garden wall can be associated with the wall at The Cedars, the Dunbar family home in Strood, Rochester. As is often typical of Dunbar’s sketch work, other unconnected images appear, in this case a figure holding a ladder and a baby held by its mother wearing a hat inscribed ‘Sunday’.
