Charles Cundall (1890 – 1971)

A prolific artist who showcased almost 250 of his creations at the Royal Academy and an additional 175 at the New English Art Club from 1918 to 1970. His body of work, which includes 149 oil paintings and numerous paper works, now reside in British public collections. Emulating esteemed masters like Constable, Gainsborough, Stubbs, Corot, and the Impressionists, Cundall’s process was rooted in on-location sketching. These ‘aids to memory’, as Gaunt phrased it, were colourful sketches that would later be transformed into larger paintings in his studio. Cundall’s work reflects a genuine approach to art, capturing the essence of his surroundings and translating them onto canvas with authenticity.
