DESCRIPTION

Provenance:
Private collection, Staffordshire

This painting of the crucifixion and deposition, by a early to mid 20th century female artist with the surname Lewis (?),is the subject of on going research.
Lewis is known to have produced mostly landscapes and exhibited in Liverpool and was evidently much awareness of the work of Eric Gill and David Jones.
The polyptych/triptych form, with the plain wooden frame is highly original. Ayla Lepine has suggested that the figure in the foreground on the right is possibly a Dominican or a Benedictine saint.

We are grateful to Dr Chloë Reddaway, Abbie Sprague, and Ayla Lepine for assistance.
