Pen and Ink, 1946
Dunbar and her husband Roger Folley designed and produced their own Christmas cards yearly from 1942 until 1959, Evelyn, using her married name, producing the design and Roger Folley contributing the text. Here the dancing figure is Pomona, the Roman minor goddess of fruit. Pomona was modelled by Dunbar’s sister-in-law Joan Duckworth, who lived next door at the time. An alternative version showed Pomona dancing while wearing a hat over-laden with fruit, which continually fell off during sessions. ‘Pomona’ Christmas cards were sent in 1946 and 1947, while the pig, also seen on this sheet of sketches, appeared on their Christmas card for 1949.
