Llewellyn, Sacha, and Paul Liss. Portrait of an Artist. Liss Llewellyn, 2021, p.388.
Taylor’s pictures combine figure and landscape with strong Neo-Romantic overtones, and are saturated with lyricism and a sense of longing. His compositions are frequently set in the artist’s Devonshire garden and usually include portraits of his wife, Audrey, (as in this etching), who was a fellow artist.
The model is the artist’s wife Audrey Wallis, (1919-1997).
Wallis was a sculptor and painter, was born in Whitchurch, Devon. She attended Leicester College of Art, 1936-40 and then won a scholarship to the RCA 1940-43. She was awarded a silver medal and a distinction for her work there and spent the next five years teaching art in York and Rotherham. She taught at Sheffield College of Art from 1948-80.
