THE ARTIST

Arthur Charles Stanley Anderson
Arthur Charles Stanley
Anderson
1884 - 1966

Painter and etcher born in Bristol the son of Alfred E. Anderson, an heraldic engraver. At the age of 15 he joined his father’s business as an apprentice engraver resulting in his not being able to study art seriously for some time. In 1909 however he won a British Institution Engraving Scholarship to the RCA where he studied until 1911. He continued his studies at Goldsmiths’ College and was elected an Associate of the RE 1910, RE 1923, an Associate of the RA 1934 and RA 1941. He exhibited internationally and received many medals and other awards. He represented his country at the Venice Biennale of 1938 as the only British entry in the line engraving and dry point section.

A member of the Engraving Faculty at the British School at Rome, 1930-52 and was awarded the CBE in 1951. Stanley Anderson exhibited at every major gallery in the British Isles and was active until a few months before his death at the age of 82. His work which often depicts pastoral activity such as farmer workers can be seen in many important galleries, but the Ashmolean at Oxford has a complete set of his etchings. His self-portrait is in the collection of the NPG and BMAG and Cheltenham Art Gallery hold oil paintings by him. He was appointed CBE in 1951 and was a member of the Bristol Savages based in his home town.
