Dorset, completed in 1948 and sold for 45 guineas (c.£2,000 at today’s values) in 1950, was one of the remarkable series of allegorical paintings from Dunbar’s brush in the immediate post-war years. In this typically messy and overcrowded sketch Dunbar is trying to establish the pose and expression of the central figure, Anne Garland, the heroine of Thomas Hardy’s The Trumpet Major. In the finished version Anne Garland is looking out to sea from Portland Bill, watching HMS Victory disappear over the horizon on her way to Trafalgar.
