DESCRIPTION

Provenance:
The Artist’s Estate; Private collection

“This is probably an imaginative view of the Battle of Britain.

The formation of bombers appears to be made up of Heinkel He 111s and one must assume that the single-engined fighters are Messerschmitt Bf 109s. There is nothing identifiable about the background – just a cloudscape – so the artist is supposing that the fighters are escorts rather than our chaps trying to attack the bombers, but as he has stated that supposition on the painting we cannot contradict it.”
