The studies were made as part of a frieze, used to decorate the house built by Stephen Courtauld (Seeley & Paget Architects).
Sir Stephen Lewis Courtauld, MC (1883–1967) was a member of the wealthy English textile family, and youngest brother of Samuel Courtauld, founder of the Courtauld Institute of Art.
