Winifred Knights, (1899-1947) and Sir Thomas Monnington, (1902-1976).
Knights and Monnington, respectively the winners of the British School of Rome Scholarship for Decorative Painting in 1920 and 1922, married in Rome in 1924. The studies they undertook whilst on their honeymoon in Piediluco resulted for both in masterpieces – Monnington’s iconic Tate Allegory and Knights mesmerising Santissima Trinita.
This online exhibition, the second in our series, Artistic Couples, includes studies for both paintings, together with rare works which have previously not been offered for sale.
In the coming weeks the series, Artistic Couples, will include: Charles Mahoney & Dorothy Bishop – Victor & Catherine Moody.
