Study for July for Country Life 1938 Gardener’s Diary Pencil 1937
In 1937 Dunbar was commissioned by Noël Carrington, editor, publisher and book designer (and incidentally Dunbar’s Hampstead landlord) to design and provide texts for the magazine Country Life’s 1938 Gardener’s Diary. In addition to vignettes and end-papers, she designed personifications for each of the months. In a typical Dunbar fancy, July is shown as a matter-of-fact gardener with such an enormous vegetable crop that the weight of it has broken the garden fence down.
