Ernest Albert Chadwick (1876–1955) was a British artist celebrated for his detailed and serene watercolour landscapes. Born on February 29, 1876, in Marston Green, Warwickshire, Chadwick was the son of John William Chadwick, a draughtsman and wood engraver, and Emily Woolley. He likely received initial artistic training from his father before attending the Birmingham Municipal School of Art.
Chadwick’s artworks predominantly depict rural scenes from Warwickshire and its neighbouring counties. An avid cyclist, he traveled extensively across England and Wales to capture suitable subjects for his paintings. His works are characterized by a gentle handling and mood, reflecting the tranquility of the countryside.
Throughout his career, Chadwick exhibited at prestigious institutions, including the Royal Academy (RA), Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours (RI), Royal Cambrian Academy (RCA), and the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists (RBSA), of which he was a member. He also showcased his work at the Newlyn Art Gallery in Cornwall in 1925 and 1926.
Notable works by Chadwick include “Delphinium Border at Fellside, Windermere” (1910) and “In Granny’s Garden,”. His paintings are held in collections such as the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
Chadwick passed away in 1955, leaving behind a legacy of artworks that continue to be appreciated for their depiction of the British countryside.
