Dunbar probably painted this early study of The Cedars shortly after her father
William Dunbar bought it in 1924. The tower was equipped as a studio to be
shared by his wife Florence, an indefatigable amateur painter of floral still lifes,
and by Evelyn, then 17. An early photograph of The Cedars appears in the
Chronology at the end of this catalogue. The house is still standing, although
bereft of its former dignity. What was the garden is now a housing estate.
