Provenance: The Artist’s Estate
In a gilded oak square section frame with broad bevelled gilded inner slip
This comes from a series of tiny coloured drawings, some done on the back of cigarette packets, from around 1916 when the artist was working as a conscientious objector on a farm in Deven. The subject is almost certainly Betty, his wife – White rarely drew or painted anyone else.
We are grateful to Hilary Chapman for her assistance.
