Pencil, 1944
Dunbar’s first major posting as a war artist was to Sparsholt Agricultural College, near Winchester, in May 1940. Sparsholt was a regional centre for the training of the Women’s Land Army recruits, mostly young women aged 18-25. In Dunbar’s sketch they have been issued with bizarre contraptions, canvas bags filled with water, equipped with rubber teats and suspended from a frame, for the teaching of milking cows. Milking Practice with Artificial Udders is now in the Imperial War Museum, London.
