An early portrait of Jessie Dunbar, in the same slightly primitive style as The Cedars (CAT 8). Jessie Dunbar had a squint, about which she was very sensitive. She modelled frequently for her sister Evelyn, her final appearance being as the principal subject in The Land Girl and the Bail Bull (FIG 19). Dunbar is always careful to avoid direct reference to her sister’s strabismus: here she shows her with eyes lowered demurely.
