In early summer 1924 William Dunbar, Evelyn’s father, bought The Cedars, a 17-room house set in
2½ acres of land in Strood, across the river Medway from Rochester. We can imagine Dunbar’s
drawing showing (L to R) her sister Jessie reading, her other sister Marjorie in a state of exhaustion
and (unfinished) the outline of her mother Florence. The three women are enjoying a well-earned
rest, perhaps, after having carried in and arranged the furniture in their new sitting room, including a
fire-screen with an image of Laddie, as always closest to Jessie, an in memoriam to their pet lurcher
who died shortly before the move.
