This very detailed panoramic view from the British trenches is very close  in composition  to Charles Sims’ painting ‘The Old German Front Line, Arras, 1916’ (The Edwardians, Fine Art Society Catalogue 2011, p.69).   

2nd Lieutenant WILLIAM HUGH DUNCAN ARTHUR, born 1892.  9th Battalion South Staffordshire Regiment.  Formerly served as 35602 Private in the Royal Army Medical Corps.  Duncan Arthur was the son of Allan and Jane Arthur, of Wellington, Shropshire.  Allan was a confectioner and Duncan was listed as a student surveyor in the 1911 Census.
