After leaving Rochester Grammar School for Girls in 1925 Dunbar set out, perhaps impetuously, to
earn her living as an artist, starting with writing and illustrating children’s books. A few were
published by Dean & Son. It is not known whether
Signed and dated: “Evelyn M. Dunbar.” 1926.
Fancy Dress Ball, which features various nursery
rhyme and children’s story characters, ever reached publication. Humpty Dumpty appears to be
presiding over Little Boy Blue, Little Red Riding Hood, Puss in Boots and Little Miss Muffet, complete
with spider.
