Watercolour
William Dunbar Water colour 1922 Subtitled “Father from life” in an unidentified handwriting, with
unconnected pencil grotesque in lower left-hand corner.
Indicative of Dunbar’s extraordinary draughtsmanship and facility with portraiture is this study of her
father William (1862-1932). She was 14 when she painted this study, which as the label attests was
submitted to the Royal Drawing Society’s 1922 exhibition for Snap-Shot Drawing, for which she was
awarded the bronze star. The submission was made by George Ward, Dunbar’s art teacher at
Rochester Grammar School for Girls, and a strong influence on her development.
