Throughout their married life (1942-1960) Dunbar and her husband, the horticultural economist Roger Folley, produced their own generally unconventional Christmas cards, she contributing artwork to her husband’s verse. His Christmas 1950 poem expresses apprehension over the nuclear threat in the context of the Korean War, Dunbar’s study (signed ‘EF’ for ‘Evelyn Folley’) shows Faith, Hope and Charity – all female, with the central figure characteristically faceless – as antidotes to such anxiety. Dunbar’s drawing carries a sizing measurement (4 1/8 inches = c.10.2 cm) for the guidance of the printer.
