Following on from the images in her Country Life 1938 Gardener’s Diary, Dunbar expanded on the idea of illustrations of the months of the year, their personifications and the horticultural activities associated with them. This is an early essay for what became An English Calendar, Dunbar’s largest and perhaps noblest canvas, with 12 images – one for each month – contained in alternate squares in a 5 x 5 grid, with a central square for the sun and the 13 empty cases occupied by seasonal skies. In this sketch Dunbar’s ‘pages’ number 24, so each month is doubled up and numbered accordingly. As is common practice with Dunbar, there are several sketches unassociated with the main content.
