Under the Mulberry Tree -Tired Out: Mother & Ernest, inscribed ‘Rough sketch from life’ at the foot, I would date at about 1924, so about 100 years old. Ernest was a family friend, possibly the brother of a schoolfriend of Evelyn’s. He appears elsewhere in Evelyn’s juvenile work with a violin. He and Florence Dunbar, Evelyn’s mother, have been knocking a tennis ball back and forth together despite The Cedars, the Dunbar home in Strood, Rochester, having no tennis court. Two dogs, one of which is the Dunbar family dog Laddie, the earliest of the three family dogs that appear in Evelyn’s work, are also resting, perhaps after an energetic time fielding loose balls.
