This is the most finished of four drawing studies for Organ’s 1981 portrait of Lady Diana Spencer. The portrait was commissioned by the Trustees of the National Portrait Gallery as the first official portrait of Diana to celebrate her forthcoming marriage to HRH Charles, Prince of Wales. In gratitude for the commission, and as a mark of friendship, the artist gave this preparatory drawing to the Gallery’s then Director, Dr John Hayes, from whom the present owner acquired the drawing.

Born in Leicester in 1935, Bryan Organ studied at Loughborough College of art and the Royal Academy Schools. He is a leading painter of people, whose sitters include singers, scientists and sportsmen, although he is best known for his ground-breaking portraits of royalty.
