Rob, the artist’s son, was born in 1927.
Figures resting or sleeping are amongst the subjects that Austin drew consistently – especially his son Rob and daughters Clare and Rachel. In the domestic family routine which formed the backdrop to his work Austin found an endless source of inspiration. Drapery was a subject that he was particularly drawn to. Compositions, which at first appear random, showing the corners of bedrooms and bathrooms are particularly characteristic of his work. Austin was a keen yachtsman.
